Objectives: To investigate a possible relationship between single nucleotide polymorphism of human IL-6 promoter £572 locus and peak BMD of Korean women.
Method: We examined BMD of 477 premenopausal Korean women(by peripheral DEXA) and extracted DNAs from peripheral blood samples. Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect IL-6 gene polymorphism.
Results: The mean age, height, and weight of patients were respectively 37.89¡¾6.84 years, 158.70¡¾4.81cm, and 56.94¡¾7.34kg. They were not significantly different(P£¾0.05). The genotype distribution was as follows; GG genotype, 263(55.1%) women; GC genotype, 186(40.0%) women; CC genotype, 28(5.9%) women. BMDs of forearm in genotype GG, GC, CC were 0.56¡¾0.17g/cm2, 0.59¡¾0.19g/cm2, 0.58¡¾0.19g/cm2, respectively. They were not significantly different(P£¾0.05). BMDs of calcaneus were 0.47¡¾0.09g/cm2, 0.47¡¾0.10g/cm2, 0.46¡¾0.11g/cm2, respectively. There was no statistical significance in BMD in each genotypes(P£¾0.05).
Conclusion: We concluded that IL-6 -572 SNP have no correlation with BMD of premenopausal Korean women. IL-6 promoter -572 SNP would not be a genetic factor of premenopausal bone mineral density.
